Wine: Friend or Foe?
By Michelle Sala, Certified Integrative Health Coach
Giving up alcohol, or limiting it, is a big stumbling block for those trying to lose weight and/or wanting to reduce inflammation which drives such health conditions as diabetes, high blood pressure, and joint pain, to name a few. Others have had to give up wine because they easily get a headache after only one glass. Many are sensitive to the sulfites added to many wines which can cause symptoms from hives and asthma to full on anaphalactic shock! Personally, I have had to drastically cut back on wine for several of these reasons – mostly, I’m never sure which wines are going to give me a massive headache even if I drink one glass.
Drinking in moderation can have some health benefits like promoting relaxation, while too much alcohol can raise one’s risk of certain types of cancer, coronary heart disease and liver disease.
Some people claim they do better with red wine and others say white. Red wines have more resveratrol benefits because they are made with the skin of the grapes where most of the antioxidants reside. White wines may actually have more sulfites than red wines because sulfites are used to prevent browning of the wine. There are other additives that can be problematic too, pesticides only being one of them.
If you would like to try a healthier wine option, I highly suggest Dry Farm Wines. Dry Farm Wines curates only the highest quality natural wines from small, organic family farms that meet their strict standard of health. Unlike today’s commercialized and processed wines, this is real wine. Nothing added, nothing removed. It’s the first wine I’ve come across that is diet-friendly, paleo-friendly, and keto-friendly!
