Fat is Good for Your Heart and Your Head!
By MIchelle Sala, Integrative Health Coach
We’ve been brainwashed into thinking that fat is bad, when in reality it is what our bodies and brain is craving! Your brain is made up of at least 60{07617649484fed9b0031b804b8d67042e8c9309551466d2a85339975f1cdc4d0} fat and if you have been put on a statin drug this can affect your cognitive functioning. In fact, statins are known to contribute to dementia in some individuals!
Your body also needs plenty of good fats for normal hormone and neurotransmitter production.
Coconut oil was demonized for many years because it is high in saturated fat. Research is now telling us that saturated fats from healthy sources do not contribute to heart disease and, in fact, have many benefits. What one needs to realize is that plant-based saturated fat is much different than saturated fat from factory-raised animals that are fed GMO filled grains. Coconut oil has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties. It can help you to increase good cholesterol (HDL) and provides quick energy. There is evidence that coconut oil may be beneficial to those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Check out this article to read more about Coconut Oil.
Medium Chain Triglyceride oils, or MCTs, are the powerful derivatives (including capric acid, caprylic acid, and lauric acid) of coconut oil that are responsible for the benefits. You need to ingest less of the MCTs (like Brain Octane or XCT from Bulletproof) to reap the benefits than if you were to use coconut oil by itself.
[Did you know that 50{07617649484fed9b0031b804b8d67042e8c9309551466d2a85339975f1cdc4d0} of the people who have heart attacks do not have high cholesterol (total cholesterol over 190) and there is research that shows that people over the age of 65 do not have less heart attacks if they remain on statin drugs???]
You may have noticed all of the ketogenic and low-carb diet ‘fads’ that are out there today. For most individuals, this low-carb/medium protein/high fat approach can be a game-changer for those who have been unsuccessful in trying to lower cholesterol, lose weight or maintain weight-loss with the longstanding low-fat, less calories, and more exercise approach.

While I personally don’t strictly adhere to any of these diet plans, I do incorporate a lot of the main points and I use MCT oils which create ketones without eating a strict low-carb/high fat.

I’m giving you permission to replace low-fat (usually high sugar or artificially sweetened, non-nutritive processed foods and processed oils) with raw nuts, avocados, extra virgin olive oil, pasture-raised eggs and grass-fed butter and ghee. Please skip the egg whites only thing. All of the nutrients are in the yolks! Get rid of the fake creamers and use REAL organic half-and-half or full-fat coconut milk (the kind in a can) in your coffee! Your brain and your heart will thank you for it!
